Miali’s Journey from Tenant to Manager!

This month is Miali’s 10-year work anniversary! We first met Miali as a tenant in our Affordable Housing program. She had seen our housing advertised at St. Mary’s School where her son was in daycare. Reflecting on that period, Miali said finding housing as a new immigrant had been nervewracking and she was grateful to find Quint. “I enjoyed living in Quint housing. We enjoyed family events organized for the tenants and they helped us get to know our neighbours and build relationships,” Miali said.

Originally from Madagascar, Miali moved to Germany in 2007 to pursue her master’s degree and eventually came to Canada in 2011. Her background is in mining and environmental management but with two small children, she couldn’t work at mining sites. To provide for her young family, she began working at a daycare but she knew this was not the career path she wanted to pursue long term.

In September of 2014, Miali applied for an Admistrative Assistant position and joined the Quint team! Over the past decade, we have had the joy of watching Miali blossom both personally and professionally – from gaining Canadian citizenship and putting down roots in our community to becoming an irreplaceable part of our organization.

In 2016, the manager of our Affordable Housing Program offered Miali the role of Eviction Prevention Coordinator. From there, she worked in both housing and employment, eventually becoming an Employment Coordinator and Program Coordinator in our Core Neighbourhoods at Work (CNAW) program.

Early this year, Miali accepted the title of Program Manager for our Core Neighbourhoods at Work program. Reflecting on her journey with Quint and her new leadership position, Miali said “This role challenges me to think beyond the obvious, to think about the needs of the community, to make connections and build networks, and learn to be comfortable with the uncomfortable. I’m honoured to be part of a team that tries to make a difference in our community, supports marginalized and multi-barriered people, and advocates for their well-being. Working at Quint has opened my eyes to what really matters.”
