New Social Enterprise Research

We recently supported the funding of Saskatchewan Economic Development Alliance’s new report on social enterprise and rural economic development in Saskatchewan. As an urban organization operating two social enterprises, the findings certainly reflected the reality we experience each day. Notably, the report emphasizes that social enterprises need both project-based and operational funding, as well as better access to financing and business planning tools. They also assert that social enterprise should be recognised as economic infrastructure: “These organizations are not merely ‘nice community projects.’ They create platforms for employment, tourism, service delivery, local procurement, cultural continuity, and confidence.” The case studies within the report also demonstrate how investment in social enterprise aligns with the Government of Saskatchewan’s Growth Plan: The Next Decade of Growth, 2020-2030. This is true of both rural and urban social enterprises.
